What was exploited
Nothing, as it turned out. The deflector panels were measured as non-compliant and the cars excluded, then the measurement itself was overturned.
The gap in the rulebook
Article 3.12.1 defined neither the reference and step planes nor a viewing distance, and Article 3.12.6 allowed a 5 mm tolerance.
What it was worth
None established.
How it was closed — Court ruling
Both cars excluded from the Malaysian GP, then reinstated. A 10 mm discrepancy measured by graduated ruler became 5 mm or less when measured by square corner at the hearing, inside tolerance. The decision was overturned in all its provisions on 22 October 1999.
What changed in the data
A championship-deciding exclusion reversed on the measurement method rather than the measurement.
Why it matters
The register's counter-example. Not every famous technical scandal is a loophole — some are the governing body getting the measurement wrong, and a register that cannot say so is not honest.
