What was exploited
A rear wing that passed the static load tests but deflected under high-speed aerodynamic load, shedding drag on the straights.
The gap in the rulebook
The Article 3.9.6 and 3.9.7 numeric limits were passable by a wing designed around the test rather than around the intent.
What it was worth
Straight-line speed.
How it was closed — Technical directive
Revised rear wing load tests introduced from the French GP on 20 June 2021, under the Article 3.9.9 reservation clause. The regulation text itself was never rewritten.
Why it matters
A clampdown that changed no regulation text at all. Any register built by diffing regulation documents would show nothing happened in 2021, which is exactly why diffing alone is not enough.
