What was exploited

Four 10-inch front wheels instead of two, so the entire front track sat behind the 1.5 m maximum front wing width — cutting frontal area and cleaning the airflow reaching the rear wing.

The gap in the rulebook

Nothing in the regulations limited the number of wheels. Front wing width was capped at 1.5 m; front tyre size was not.

What it was worth

Reduced drag and improved rear-wing flow, plus a larger total front contact patch. Scheckter and Depailler finished 1-2 at the 1976 Swedish GP.

How it was closed — Regulation amendment

Nothing at the time — no protest, no ban. The concept died on merit first: the P34B gained weight (620 kg against the original's 595 kg), the small tyres struggled to all maintain contact on bumpy circuits, and Tyrrell abandoned the layout for 1978. The rule came seven years later, and it is one amendment covering both six-wheel layouts at once — 1983 Art. 9.1 "Four wheel drive cars are forbidden" and Art. 11.3 "The number of wheels is fixed at four".

What changed in the data

Jody Scheckter remains the only driver ever to win a Formula 1 race in a six-wheeled car.

Why it matters

Corrects a claim this project previously carried — that no rule ever reached the P34's architecture. Article 11.3 outlaws the layout outright. The rule buried something already dead, but it exists, and it is 1983.
